John Best's gallops

Our half-mile uphill gallop provides our racehorses with a safe, level, even surface to train on. It's made up of a sand and rubber mix called Softrack which creates an almost perfect surface for racehorses to exercise on, all year round.
Safety
The aim is to give the horses the most injury-free surface possible, and our rate of tendon injuries (the most common injury to young racehorses in training) is very low - perhaps one injury in 500 runners. We harrow the surface during and after each lot of horses to smooth out hoofprints and remix the sand and rubber.
Year-round training
The gallop drains quickly in wet weather, won't freeze in the cold, and creates minimal kickback of sand. The only weather that can prevent us using it is heavy snowfall - it's a true all-weather surface.
