Rising Cross

2003 brown filly, by Cape Cross out of Woodrising
Race record: 5 wins, 4 places and £257,872 prize money from 27 starts
Rising Cross is the winner of five races and over £250,000 prize money - not bad going for a pony-sized filly who was overlooked at the sales on the basis of her small stature!
This daughter of Cape Cross nonetheless proved to have a huge heart and a battling nature - winning three times as a two-year-old before graduating to the top-class ranks as a three-year-old. Rising Cross placed second only to Ballydoyle's star Alexandrova in the 2006 English Oaks, then third to the same filly in the Irish Oaks.
Having been bought at the sales for just £14,000, Rising Cross was sold for a staggering £325,000, but remained at John Best's Hucking yard. The confidence of her new owner was to pay off. Rising Cross went on to win the Group Two Park Hill Stakes at York - demonstrating her toughness by running gamely on despite being hit in the head by a rival's whip.
Rising Cross, or Wilma as she is known in the yard, remains with John Best, and will be campaigned over staying distances as a four-year-old.
